Chapter Two:
The Arrangement
The next morning, Selena awoke to the sun shining bright on her face. It was still pretty early, but without any drapes to cover the large windows, the light streamed right in. As she sat up on the bed, she realized that Josh was no longer beside her. Her friends, however, were still sprawled on the floor and on the sofa. “Well, that still hasn’t changed”, she thought. She had been roommates with them when they all went to college, and needless to say, none of them were morning people.
She got up and went to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. She promptly went downstairs to find Josh making coffee.
“Coffee? I make a mean cappuccino.” he offered, gesturing towards his cappuccino machine.
“Sure,” she said giving him a small smile. He went on to make the coffee as she watched him. She was still feeling a bit awkward about the things that happened the previous night. Josh, on the other hand, seemed to feel at ease with everything. She watched him and marveled at how, with disheveled hair and this early in the morning, he could still look so damn good. He didn’t have the abs and biceps that most girls went for. He was broad-shouldered and lean, but not muscular, which was exactly her type. What she found most disarming was his boyish grin, like the one he was giving her now as he placed a cup of coffee in front of her. She took it and sat by the counter.
“Where are the others?” she asked, referring to the ones she saw sleeping on the couches the night before.
“They left earlier,” he shrugged as if not really caring where the others went.
“I see. What’s for breakfast?” she asked, again trying to keep the conversation going as she was starting to feel awkward with nobody else around.
He seemed embarrassed by this question and when he replied, she realized why, “Uhm, cereal?”
“Not one to stock up, huh?” she joked.
“Well, I’m not here much, so I don’t really stock up,” he explained as she got up from her chair and went to the fridge.
“Do you have any eggs at least?”
“Yes, should have some in there.”
“Want an omelette? A real breakfast?”
“Sure, if you can make them,” he joked. She smirked at him, and with that, it seemed all the awkwardness she felt dissipated. She cooked them both each an omelette, and they went outside to enjoy their breakfast while lounging by the pool and enjoying the view. After finishing their meal, she and Josh got to talking.
“So, what are you up to after this?” he asked.
“Not much really. I have to go back to my apartment and pack up, I guess.”
“Pack up?”
“Yeah, my financial status took a hit when I made this career move. I need to find a cheaper place to live in so I can afford the rent,” she shrugged at him.
“I know I haven’t talked to you in a while, but I’m really proud of what you’re doing.
